School of Artificial Intelligence Successfully Holds Inaugural Meeting for "AI Science Popularization and General Education Center"

Time:March 17, 2025

To implement national requirements outlined in the New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan and promote high-quality advancement in AI science popularization and general education, the School of Artificial Intelligence held the inaugural meeting for the "Artificial Intelligence Science Popularization and General Education Center" on March 17. The event was attended by members of the school’s leadership and faculty representatives from the center, with Party Secretary Jie Yang presiding over the meeting.

At the outset, Secretary Jie Yang outlined the background for establishing the center. The school has already achieved notable progress in AI science popularization and general education. Its Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course and related teaching materials have played a foundational and pivotal role in shaping AI general education curricula across municipal universities in Beijing. Additionally, societal demand for AI literacy continues to grow. Last fall, the school organized Beijing’s "AI+" thematic training program, which received high praise from the Municipal Committee's Organization Department. Building on these efforts, the center aims to consolidate faculty expertise, elevate existing initiatives into distinctive achievements, and further enhance the school’s and university’s influence.

Following this, Vice Dean (Acting) Wenjun Xu presented Professor Jun Guo with a letter of appointment, designating him as the "Honorary Expert" of the center. Professor Jun Guo emphasized that AI development represents a once-in-a-century opportunity. As AI continues to empower various industries and drive societal progress, advancing science popularization and general education in this field carries profound significance. "We must inspire more students and the public to proactively adapt to, learn, and apply AI technologies," he stated.

In his concluding remarks, Vice Dean Wenjun Xu highlighted China’s ongoing efforts to establish a comprehensive AI general education system spanning primary, secondary, and higher education. Through curriculum reform and practical innovation, the goal is to cultivate interdisciplinary talents with strong AI literacy. "With robust academic strengths in AI, the establishment of this center not only innovates educational models but also fulfills our responsibility to serve national strategies and societal needs," he said. "We will seize this opportunity to create a 'BUPT Model' in AI science popularization and education, providing strong support for national AI development priorities."

The successful convening of this meeting marks a significant step forward for the School of Artificial Intelligence in advancing science popularization and general education. Moving forward, the college will deepen collaborative mechanisms, strive to become a benchmark in AI education, and nurture high-caliber talents with innovative thinking, digital literacy, and cross-disciplinary capabilities for the intelligent era, thereby contributing to China’s scientific and technological self-reliance.
